Ultimate Mallorca Travel Guide: Where to Stay, Eat & Explore in Summer
Mallorca or Majorca?
It’s officially called Mallorca—that’s the local Catalan and Spanish spelling.
For accuracy (and a little cultural respect), go with Mallorca.
Mallorca Travel Diary
(August 2023)
Golden coastlines, breezy rooftop bars, beach-hopping days, and dreamy sunsets by the sea.
Sounds like a European Summer to me!
There’s something magical about Mediterranean summers—and Mallorca was no exception.
I visited this Spanish island in August 2023, and here’s everything I’d recommend if you’re planning your own sun-soaked escape.
Getting Around:
Car or Scooter?
Tip No.1
HIRE A CAR
Mallorca is way bigger than you might expect, and while the idea of zipping around on a scooter sounds fun in theory, in practice—under that relentless summer sun—it’s not for the faint-hearted.
The roads are built for cars, and if you’re not super confident on a motorbike, it’s better to avoid navigating the winding coastal cliffs on two wheels.
But if you’re up for it, scooter hire is about €40 a day. I gave it a shot, and while it added a bit of thrill to the journey, I definitely recommend early morning or late afternoon rides to avoid the peak heat.
Day Trips
Beaches, Boats & Breathtaking Views
Coastal Gems:
Cala Pi – A beautiful, tucked-away beach that feels like a local secret. Picture crystal-clear turquoise water, dramatic cliffs, and a peaceful vibe. Worth the drive or ride.
Faro del Cap Blanc / Cabo Blanco – A scenic spot perfect for golden hour photos or a coastal walk. Quiet, raw, and peaceful.
Boat Trippin’
I would definately reccomend a sunset or day boat cruise! Grab your mates and book it in advance if you want to make it a lil’ more special.
The one we did was from a local boat company on the esplande. Depsite bing in a bigger group and not venturing too far off the shore, it was actually really fun! the package included a few drinks, a swim stop, and those postcard-perfect Mediterranean views. These run regularly, but I’d recommend booking at least a day in advance.
If your budget allows, go all in and hire a private boat with your friends—it’s such a luxe way to explore hidden coves. Look up Airbnb Experiences for some great value options.
This one looks hella fun - Explore a traditional Llaüt
City Escapes:
Palma
Mallorca’s capital, Palma, is a blend of culture, architecture, and charm. You could spend hours just wandering the laneways of the Old Town, with its bougainvillea-draped balconies, artisan boutiques, and cobblestone streets.
Don’t miss:
Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca – Imposing and beautiful, especially at sunset.
Basilica de Sant Francesc – A quieter, lesser-known gem.
Sunset Promenade – Walk along the waterfront as the sky turns pink and the city lights come alive.Night Markets – A must-do for local crafts, food, and people-watching.
Shopping – From high street to homegrown brands, Palma has it all.
Where to Eat & Drink
There’s no shortage of incredible food and wine across Mallorca. Some tips from my plate to yours:
Try the paella—rich, flavourful and best enjoyed beachside.
Sip on a sangria at sunset (or whenever really).Look out for authentic local restaurants tucked in the laneways—think deep red interiors, moody lighting, and outdoor tables lit by candles.
NENI Mallorca was high on my list. While I didn’t make it there this time, it’s worth mentioning. It’s an indoor-outdoor spot with Israeli, Lebanese, and Mediterranean influences, Moroccan-style décor, and a relaxed bohemian vibe. If you go—please let me what it’s like!
Where to Stay: whala!fun Hotel, El Arenal
We stayed at whala!fun in El Arenal—just 6km from the airport and 11km from Palma.
Modern, clean, and colourful (loved the bold artwork on the outside of the buildings)
Rooftop pool and bar with a stunning island view was a huge win
Great location—close to shops and only a 10-minute walk to the beach
(and honestly, surprisingly quiet at night, with good soundproofing)🍳 Buffet brekky was unreal
Twin room for 4 nights = $1,231.65 (which I thought was decent value if split between two?)
Perfect for a base that feels secure, central, and stylish without breaking the bank.
Nightlife & Shows
Whether you want a casual drink or a big night out, Mallorca delivers:
Palma has a more laid-back, chic nightlife vibe.
Magaluf is where the party is (and the Brits) —if that’s your scene.
For something truly unique, check out the House of Son Amar—a spectacular venue set within a 16th-century estate just 10 minutes from Palma.
Think Cirque du Soleil meets Spanish flair, complete with dinner and drinks under the stars.
Once inside, you’re guided to your own private viewing area, where food and drinks are served throughout the night.
Not to mention, the staff were absolutely lovely and super helpful—even organising a taxi back to our hotel once the show ended.
It was a pretty special way to celebrate my birthday and as always, am in AWE of the pure talent of the performers.
I N C R E D I B L E!
What Else?
Plan your meals ahead. Some of the best restaurants fill up fast in summer—so book in advance if there’s somewhere you’re dying to try.
Pack light and breezy. Think linen, sandals, and lots of SPF. The Mediterranean sun doesn’t mess around.
Stay hydrated. Especially if you’re walking around all day or zipping across the island on a scooter.
Choose your area wisely. Mallorca’s got both tranquil coves and wild party scenes—so know your vibe and pick your poison. It’s all about finding the escape you need.
Slow down and soak it all in. You’re on holiday, for god’s sake—enjoy it!
